Sensei Dave is a senior instructor at Miyabi Ryu. Sensei David has had over 14 years experience in martial arts and holds a 4th Dan in Ju Jitsu. Sensei David takes his own Martial Arts Training very seriously and also the training of his own students at his club held at Smithills Sports Centre, Smithills, Bolton, Saturdays 10am - 11am (7yrs+). Past History
Sensei Fred Bateman started in Martial Arts training back in 1985 in a system of karate called Anshin Ryu. This style was prolific throughout the North East England at that time under the association called Sentenashi Karate Kosai. The system was a mixture of Wado Ryu and Shotokan. Sensei Bateman’s instructors during this time were Keith Bell 4th Dan and Garry Howlett 3rd Dan.
After the break-up of Sentenashi in 1992 he joined UKASKO, and along with his wife and son set up his own dojo in Darlington. During this time he studied Shotokan further under Sensei Terry Mathur, 5th Dan. Then in 1998 after coming back from Okinawa a change in direction in his empty hand art was made. He wanted to look for a style that was not sport related, and he found this in a system called Kamishin Ryu. Sensei Bateman has been studying this system since 1998 under his instructor Phil Snewin (5th Dan).
His intense interest in the Martial Arts led him to the weapons art of Kobudo. This was back in 1993 when he started learning a system that was based upon Matayoshi Kobudo. This system was associated to IOKA under the Sensei Mikio Nishiuchi (7th Dan). Then in 1998 he got the opportunity to travel to Okinawa, Naha, to train with Kaicho Takiashi Kinjo (9th Dan) and Mikio Nishiuchi on mainland Japan. It was in Okinawa that he was graded to 2nd Dan in that style of Kobudo. During this time Sensei Bateman was also exposed to a style of Karate called Pangai-noon-ryu (also known as Uechi-ryu). Back in the years between 1996 & 1998 he opened a dojo in Darlington to teach this kobudo. This he did right up until he was invited to attend a Matayoshi Gasshuku in 2007 where he met Sensei Franco Sanguinetti (6th Dan). Bateman Sensei was so impressed with the teaching of Sanguinetti Sensei, and with the Matayoshi system that he decided to affiliate to Sensei Sanguinetti and the Kodokan in Naha, Japan.
Although he saw his past experience of kobudo as a system close to Matayoshi Kobudo, there were differences to the system being taught by the Kodokan through Sanguinetti Sensei. So his decision to change direction he now sees as the “coming back” to the family of Matayoshi Kobudo.
Then during the second Gasshuku in 2008, Sanguinetti Sensei awarded Bateman Sensei a Shodan in the system. It is his ambition with other instructors coming on board to see Matayoshi Kobudo grow in the UK.
Other Martial Art Disciplines
Other martial arts Bateman Sensei has studied over the years have been in Aikido (2 years), Ninjutsu (4 years in Togakure Ninjutsu Ryu, under Shihan Brian McCarthy) and Iaido (Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, graded to 1st Kyu in the system). Although he has enjoyed most of these other styles, his first love has always been Karate and Kobudo. He has competed for UKASKO’s international English Kata squad, and became UKASKO’s Chief Referee, after qualifying as an English Karate Governing Body (now English Karate Federation) Kumite and Kata Referee. He is also one of UKASKO Dan grading officers. Over this time UKASKO has awarded Sensei Bateman Dan grades in Karate and Kobudo. His current grading in Kobudo will now be under the tutelage of Franco Sanguinetti Sensei, 6th Dan. In was in January 2008 UKASKO awarded Sensei Bateman a 5th Dan Black Belt in Karate. Sensei Bateman now instructs regular classes in Anshin Ryu, Kamishin Ryu Karate and Matayoshi Kobudo. He also teaches Hanbo & Shuchu techniques (walking stick & small hand stick), and monthly classes in Iaido/Bokken (sword drawing & wooden sword).
